Wren, I have to agree! And don't worry, before making the post I had to look up "possum" to make sure I wasn't misapplying any terms. :)

I'll have to give the memoir meme some thought, that's an interesting one!

Rats, I thought I'd posted the invitation to a six-word memoir meme. Guess not, so I'll try again - or just go to my blog and look for the post "Cynicism ...." I'll look forward to your life in brief.

How can anyone not love a critter that cute?

And I won't admit to how old I was before I knew that "opossum" and "possum" were the same critter.

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone!

@ Azz: I can't say I've ever seen a stuffed possum for sale, either. That's pretty cute, I'm glad she's so fond of it. :)

@ Beth: I've never seen one in the wild away from the house, either, I'm pretty sure. They seem to come pretty readily to food set out for them (or other animals), though.

@ Nina: I suppose cars are a pretty foreign concept to a wild animal, and they can get easily disoriented and confused as a result. I have a feeling that their interest in roadkill makes them more susceptible to collisions than other animals like deer or raccoons who simply crossing the road, not feeding at the side of it. They're also slow movers, which doesn't help much, either.

I love opossums--glad you did such a nice job introducing them to so many who don't see them as more than trash collectors.
I just wish they seemed smarter. I don't know if it's their daytime vision, but they always seem to stumble into the paths of cars.

Cute feet, too!

Those pictures are incredible. What an interesting post--to tell you the truth, I've never seen what a possum looks like alive except maybe way up in a tree. Usually, I've seen them along the road (playing possum for real) and never have I seen them in the north--fascinating that they are moving up this way.

Fantastic photos :-)

My daughter has a stuffed toy possum that we found in the shop at London Zoo. Daughter gets very upset when people think that Blossom (the Possum) is a rat, and points out her prehensile tail. I must admit I've never seen another soft toy possum for sale anywhere!
